Provo Mayor and City Council to Discuss Predatory Towing

If Mayor John Curtis and members of the municipal council change the towing
policies it can affect the towing companies accused of predatory towing. The towing
policies, the limit of companies on the non-consensual police towing list, and the
requirement that local lots maintain minimum staffing levels are apart of the Provo
council’s work session discussion on Tuesday Oct 23, 2012.
Mayor John Curtis posted a blog called “We’re getting carried away here,”
referring to those towing companies, as the Provo Mayor says “Those bad guys who lurk
around waiting to jump on a vehicle left 30 seconds to run a plat of brownies to a sick
friend.” The blog received more than 100 comments. Many of the comments came from
Provo locals, expressing their past problems and concerns. Giving Mayor John Curtis an
idea of what the town residents feel about these companies who are wrongfully towing
vehicles.
Many people had towing stories to share. Kaneischa Johnson, who owns Velour
Live Music Gallery on University Ave., says, “For years we have put up signs every
night about where not to park. All the time our sign is moved and hidden. We have
pictures of the tow truck driver hiding the signs. He later stole the sign. We can see the
tow truck circling around waiting for the trucks to be left alone.”
One company listed on the mayor’s blog and listed in at least 25 complaints was
University Parking Enforcement. The owner Michael Lamont will attend the city council
meeting and says his company is following all city and state laws.
